IDRIS WOKE TO GIGGLES, and small fingers poking his chest. He groaned and opened his eyes. Jok and Wruc jumped away, blue eyes wide in alarm.

“It’s all right.” His voice rasped, and he blinked as his memories and surroundings came into focus. The fight. Angharad. The snowstorm. He’d crossed into a meadow full of sunshine, but now... he was inside a tree? Smooth brown bark surrounded him and extended up as far as he could see. And he lay on a soft bed of... he closed his fist around the surface he lay on. Moss?

“Angharad.” He cleared his throat. “Where is my sister?”

Jok knelt beside him and pointed over his head. “Next to you.”

Idris sat up and turned. Angharad lay peacefully. The Tulwyth teg had cleaned her of blood, dirt, and sweat. Her red hair shone. She wore a dress of gold silk, the individual strands shimmering. Flowers decorated her bed. His sister could just be asleep, except for that green aura surrounding her. That had only shown after she died.

“Where are we?”

Wruc climbed back on the bed. “We brought you to our home. Humans are so heavy. Everyone had to drag you.”

Idris laughed. He was bigger and heavier than most. “Sorry. I guess I was tired.”

Jok nodded. “You slept for two days.”

Glancing down, Idris took in the bandages and poultices covering his many injuries. That explained why his body didn’t hurt as much as it should. “Thank you for helping me. I am a terrible doctor.”

“It’s okay.” Jok wrinkled her nose. “Rin likes to put things that smell bad on people.”

Rin entered, carrying a steaming bowl and some cloths. “Out, you two. Let him wake up fully before you two drive him crazy.”

They each poked at his tattoos one more time, then waved and skipped out.

Idris swung his legs out of bed. “Thank you for taking care of my sister.”

“She saved us, too. Tending to her was the least we could do.” Rin extended the bowl and cloths to him. “You should be able to wash yourself now.”

Idris accepted the dish and dipped one of the rags into the water.

She sat cross-legged on the floor bedside him. “You will go after the mage?”

“Yes. Sleeping for two days has cost me more time than I’d like, but I will find him. May I leave Angharad here with you while I’m gone? I’ll return to take her home.”

Rin nodded. “We will watch over her until you return. No one will find her.”

Fed, dressed, and clothed, Idris hefted both axes to his shoulder and stepped out of the fairy ring just before sunrise. A fresh blanket of snow covered the bodies and blood.

Where should he go? Angharad had her seeing, however unreliable that was, to give her clues. The mage had headed south. That was the only clue Idris had. He reached for the magic in his tattoos. That had been restored, along with his physical self. Drawing on the bear for strength, the wolf for endurance, and the horse for stubbornness, he turned south and broke into a distance-eating lope.
